Hydrogen Bond
The textbook says that a hydrogen bond will dominate all other intermolecular forces, so first, is It possible for a molecule to have a covalent bond and a hydrogen bond? and second what would be the effect of that?

Re: Hydrogen Bond
Yes! A molecule can have both hydrogen bonds and covalent bond. Hydrogen bonds are INTERmolecular while covalent bonds are INTRAmolecular.

Re: Hydrogen Bond
Since a H bond is intermolecular and a covalent bond is intramolecular, a molecule can have a covalent bond and then share a H bond with another molecule of the same species. I guess the effect of that would be that the molecule with the covalent bond (like H2O) would be attracted to another H2O via the H bond.

Re: Hydrogen Bond
As a side note, there are both intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonds, in that there are interactions involving hydrogen between separate molecules and within molecules. Intramolecular hydrogen bonds are just covalent bonds involving hydrogen.

Can you tell me what the difference is between inter- and intra- ?
Re: Hydrogen Bond
Intramolecular forces are the forces that hold atoms together within a molecule. Intermolecular forces are forces that exist between molecules.

Re: Hydrogen Bond
Hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds can happen at the same time because hydrogen bonds are within the same molecule (H with N,O,F) whereas covalent bonds are nonionic bonds between different molecules.

Re: Hydrogen Bond
Can someone explain what Hydrogen Bonding is? What is the difference from covalent bonds?
