Resonance

Postby 405098546 » Mon Nov 26, 2018 1:38 am

Is it possible to determine when a molecule will have resonance? Basically I'm wondering how do you know when there will be multiple lewis structures for one molecule.

Basically. you have to draw a lewis structure first that fits the molecule. Then, see if it has resonance. It's difficult to just tell off the bat unless you have a lot of practice.

Normally, you just draw the Lewis structure for the molecule and then check if there are multiple possible positions for a double/triple bond, which means that there can be more than one Lewis structure.

When you draw out a Lewis structure, check to see if a double or triple bond can be moved to another atom. I believe the formal charge should also be the same for the resonance structures.
