Covalent vs. Ionic

Postby Katie Frei 1L » Tue Nov 27, 2018 7:16 pm

Does anyone know if we were asked to determine if a compound was ionic vs covalent, would we be given a chart of electronegativity for test 3?

I don't think we will be asked to distinguish between the two, maybe just say which is more covalent or ionic in character. In that case, just used the periodic table to see which set of atoms have the greater difference in electronegativity-- this bond will be more ionic in character.

During one lecture Dr. Lavelle said any questions on ionic/covalent character would be pretty straightforward if we aren't given an electronegativity chart. So we can just figure it out based on how close/far apart the atoms in a molecule are on the periodic table.
