Re: Bonds
Hi, usually a metal and a nonmetal together will form an ionic bond. In an ionic bond, an electron is basically donated.Metals are usually atoms, or elements found in group 1 or 2 of the periodic table. Covalent bonds generally consist of two nonmetals together. In a covalent bond, the electron is usually shared.

Ionic bonds will form when when an atom transfers its electron to another atom, whereas covalent bonds form when the electrons are shared between atoms. Atoms that like to transfer there electrons are usually anions and cations. The cation is usually a metal and the anion is usually a nonmetal.

Re: Bonds
Most ionic bonds are formed between a metal and a nonmetal element, when the electron is given/not shared. Covalent bonds are usually formed between two nonmetal elements, and they share the electrons.

Re: Bonds
It depends on the type of elements that are bonding together in the reaction.
Metal and non-metal then an electron is passed on from the metal to the non-metal so that they would each have a stable octet shell, in covalent bonding it is between 2 non-metals and the electrons are shared between the two elements through Van Der Waal's forces of attraction.
