some atoms are stable with fewer than electrons: H, B, Be
some atoms are stable with more than 8 electrons: P, S, Cl, As, SE, Br, Kr, Sb, Te, I, Xe

I don't think we have gone over this yet, but in addition to H, He, Li, Be, some elements can have an expanded octet by using the d/f orbitals.

Instead of memorizing the elements, just remember that the exceptions to the octet rule are the the first four elements because they would need to gain too many electrons to have an octet, which is very difficult.

the exceptions to the octet rule are H, He, Li , and Be! also if the electron is in the 3rd period or above they can occupy greater than 8 electrons going beyond the octet rule.
