Ionic bonds are the transfer of electrons between metals and nonmetals, whereas covalent bonds are the sharing of electrons between nonmetals.

Ionic compounds transfer dots (electrons) from metal to nonmetal atom.
Non metals do not form cations because their ionization energies are too high sot hey share electrons to form covalent bonds.

Drawing Lewis dot structures definitely helps in depicting both of these types of bonds. In an ionic bond, between a metal and a nonmetal, one atom gives up an electron to make both atoms more stable, and this is shown with anion and cation depictions(+/-). In a covalent bond, between nonmetals, two atoms share electrons until both have a more stable configuration.

Ionic Bonds is when an ion with a positive charge bonds with an ion with a negative charge. This is when a metal typically bonds with a non metal. On the other hand, Covalent Bonds is when two nonmetals form a bond through the sharing of electrons.
