electron configuration order

Postby NHolmes3L » Sun Oct 27, 2019 10:09 pm

does 4f or 5s come first?

I believe that 5s is filled before 4f.

So just like the d-orbital and s-orbital, the 5s comes first, but after 2 electrons are in the 5s the 4f is actually placed before when you're writing out the electron configuration. You don't really need to worry about it because he said we wouldn't be tested on it.

5s comes before, but don't worry too much about the f-block since Dr. Lavelle stated in lecture that we wouldn't really be dealing with it.

5s will be filled before 4f

5s orbitals are always filled before 4d orbitals since they are lower in energy even though they have a higher principal quantum number. Similarly, 6s orbitals are lower in energy than 5d orbitals, so 6s orbitals are always filled up first. 5s, 5p, and 6s orbitals are all lower in energy than 4f orbitals. In other words, to get an electron in the 4f orbital, you must fill up the 5s orbitals, 5p orbitals, and 6s orbitals first.
