2A. 1 Question

Postby Aashka Popat 1A » Sun Oct 27, 2019 10:10 pm

This is the question: Give the number of valence electrons (including d electrons)
for each of the following elements: (a) Sb; (b) Si; (c) Mn; (d) B.

I understand how to find the number of valence electrons, but I am confused about why the question says "including d electrons;" how does it apply to the question?

Sb and Mn have electrons in the d-shell so those electrons are counted as valence electrons because they are in the outermost shell.

Are those valence electrons also used in bonding when we draw out lewis structures?
