Homework 2A15

Why does is Ga, in problem D, form ions with a +3 charge? Why not -5 so it becomes stable?

I think question 2A15 is asking what is the likely charge formed by the given elements, rather than what elements it would form ions with based on its charge. The answer is +3 because Ga is "willing" to give away 3 electrons. Hopefully I'm understanding your question correctly!

The explanation above is right. The question is asking for the charge of the ion when it gives or receives e- to become stable. In this case, it would be easier for Ga to lose and give away its 3 valence e- rather than looking to gain 5.

For Gallium to give away 3 electrons requires lower energy compared to accepting 5 electrons.
