Atomic and ionic radii

Postby EmilyJoo_1G » Wed Oct 30, 2019 8:46 am

What's the difference between atomic radius and ionic radius?

The atomic radius is half the diameter of a neutral atom, measuring across the outer electrons. The ionic radius is half the distance between two gas atoms that are joined by an ionic bond. Both generally have the same periodic table trend: radius decreases moving across a period and increases moving down a group.

Atomic radius is half the diameter measured across one ground state atom, while ionic radius is half the distance between the nuclei of two ionically bonded atoms.

Furthermore, the atomic radii between the two atoms are generally the same, while in ionic, the two radii are different because they are different elements
