Ionic character in covalent bonds
Can someone explain how covalent bonds can have increasing ionic character? Thanks!

Covalent bonds can have increasing ionic character if there is a difference in the electronegativity between the two elements , which there always is between two different element. The larger the electronegativity, the larger difference in their ability to pull electrons to itself, which then becomes unequal sharing and looks more like an ionic bond in which an electron is taken away from a neighboring atom by the atom having higher electronegativity.

An easy way to determine ionic character in covalent bonds is looking at the atoms on the periodic table. If the atoms are closer, the more likely it is covalent with the atom of higher electronegativity pulling the shared electrons more closely to itself.

The stronger the bond in covalent molecules, the more ionic character it possesses. So look for molecules with a difference in electronegativity to tell the strength of the bond. If they are similar it will not be as ionic, if they are different it will act more ionic.
