Character of Bonds
How do we determine ionic or covalent character of bonds? Is it just electronegativity?

Re: Character of Bonds
yes, if the difference in electronegativity is less than 1.5 then it is covalent, and if the difference is greater then 2 it is ionic.

he might but just in case use intuition about what is bonding together (ion-ion, a nonmetal and a metal, metal and a metal, two nonmetals, etc.

We won't be getting electronegativity values, so we have to know the trend on the periodic table.

Using trends, you need to know the electronegativity of atoms relative to other atoms.

As everyone mentioned, we won't be given the actual electronegativity values on the tests. However, I feel that any question regarding comparing electronegativity values will be more intuitive to answer based on the electronegativity trend on the periodic table.

Could you expand on this please? What kind of bonds form from the interactions you just mentioned?
