Bond Order?

Postby sarahsalama2E » Sun Nov 17, 2019 11:34 pm

We didn't really go over bond order in lecture, and haven't really seen it come up much in the HW, but I was wondering if we need to know what bond order is and its calculation?

I'm not sure if bond order will be on the midterm but for this class' purpose it is a pretty simple concept. For the molecules in this class, bond order is just the number of bonds between two atoms. If there is a single bond between two carbons, the bond order is 1. If there is a double bond between them, the bond order is 2.

Going off of the last post, the bond order can change for resonance because all the bonds become the same because of delocalized electrons. So it is possible to have a 1.5 bond (1single and one double combining) or 1.33 bond (2 singles and one double combining).
