Hello
Can someone explain the difference between intra and intermolecular forces and what forces would go under each one?
Thanks

Re: Intra vs Inter molecular forces
Intermolecular forces (london, dipole-dipole, hydrogen bonding) are between different molecules while intramolecular forces are within one molecule (ionic bonds, covalent bonds).

Re: Intra vs Inter molecular forces
Intramolecular forces involve the sharing or exchange of electrons while intermolecular forces involve fluctuating electron distribution.

Re: Intra vs Inter molecular forces
Intermolecular forces are between molecules and they are the forces of attractions between separate molecules that cause them to form liquids and solids. Intramolecular forces are forces which hold atoms together to form a molecule (like a chemical bond).

As Michelle said, INTERmolecular = between molecules, while INTRAmolecular = within a molecule. When a substance is evaporating, the intermolecular forces will be broken, while the intramolecular forces will remain intact. For example, when liquid water turns to water vapor, the hydrogen bonds between different H2O molecules are broken, but the H-O bonds within each molecule remain intact.
Hope this helped!

Re: Intra vs Inter molecular forces
intermolecular forces are between different molecules. These forces include dipole-dipole, H bonds, and LDF or induced dipole forces. Intramolecular forces are between atoms of a molecule and include ionic and covalent bonds.

Re: Intra vs Inter molecular forces
Intramolecular forces are the forces holding atoms together within a molecule, while intermolecular forces are forces that exist between molecules. Some examples of intermolecular forces include hydrogen bonds, dipole-dipole, induced dipole-dipole, and London dispersion forces. Intramolecular forces are ionic and covalent bonds.

Re: Intra vs Inter molecular forces
Intermolecuar forces--> forces between different molecules (ex: hydrogen bonding)
Intramolecular forces--> forces within the same one molecule (ex: ionic bonds)
Intramolecular forces--> forces within the same one molecule (ex: ionic bonds)
