Re: Main group elements
I think they are the groups (columns) 1 and 2 and 13-18. The rest are transition metals and inner transition metals (the two rows at the bottom). As for why they are called main group elements, I am not sure.

Re: Main group elements
^^ what Ethan said. Also, maybe they are called main group cause they are the most relavant/abundant elements in nature?

Re: Main group elements
I believe the main group elements are any of the chemical elements belonging to the s and p blocks of the periodic table. The main group elements are important because they, along with a few light transition metals, are the most abundant elements in the universe, solar system, and on Earth.

Re: Main group elements
To add on to what Daniela said, because the main group elements are the most abundant elements on found on Earth, they are also called "representative elements", which for me makes it easier to remember the reason for being main group elements.

Re: Main group elements
Does main group atoms have any significance on bonding? Like because many are far apart from each other in electronegativity does that mean that they are more likely to form ionic bonds or does it not matter?

Re: Main group elements
Some main group elements form covalent bonds while others don't. When the electronegativity surpasses a difference of 2, it is more realistic to represent the bond between those two elements with an ionic bond.

Re: Main group elements
The main group elements are also referred to as representative elements because I think the number of valence electrons present in the elements of these groups represents their respective group.

Re: Main group elements
The main group elements are the elements that belong to the s-block and the p-block on the periodic table. These include groups 1-2 and 13-18, and are often referred to as the representative elements.
