Textbook problem

Postby 805377003 » Sun Nov 15, 2020 5:00 pm

3F.3 For which of the following molecules will dipole–dipole interactions be important: (a) CH 4 ; (b) CH 3 Cl ; (c) CH 2 Cl 2 ; (d) CHCl 3 ; (e) CCl 4 ?

Can someone explain this?

It comes down to whether the molecule is polar. If the molecule is polar then dipole-dipole interactions will be important, but if the molecule is non-polar then it has no dipoles and so those interactions will be significantly less important.
