midterm 2: knowing compounds

Postby Kaylee Nezwek 1D » Sun Nov 15, 2020 6:47 pm

Hi! For the second midterm, does anyone know if we will be expected to write chemical formulas from their names, such as being given "periodate ion" or "arsenate ion" and knowing these are "IO4 -" and "As04 -3"?

I believe the names and chemical formulas would be provided on the test- I don't think we're expected to have memorized them since Dr. Lavelle hasn't taught/tested us on nomenclature yet.

Yes, we havent really been lectured on the naming of compounds yet so I wouldn't worry about that too much for midterm 2. I think once he lectures on it or once it is on the study guide for the test then we will need to know it for that coming exam.

I think they would be provided as they are not part of the syllabus.

I agree that we most likely wouldn't need to know nomenclature for the midterm, but I think it's still a good idea to at least be somewhat familiar with knowing polyatomic ions.

Since we have never been formally taught chemical formulas in this class, I don't think we are expected to know them during the test

I don't think we need to know them; they should be given on the midterm. If he wanted us to memorize them he would probably say so explicitly.

I think they will be provided. I don't think we are expected to know compounds that extensively right now.

Since it wasn't mentioned in the last midterm either, I'd assume compounds will be provided and that memorizing nomenclature wouldn't be mandatory. Unless he explicitly mentions in an upcoming lecture or revises learning objectives, I don't believe it would be tested on for midterm 2.

Because we haven't been taught nomenclature of names of compounds yet they will be provided in this midterm.

Hello, I don't think we're going to have to memorize the names of certain chemical formulas because we haven't learned it yet.

I believe compound names would be provided for us on the midterm exam.

As others have said, I believe the name will be provided to us.

We are not expected to know how to write out the chemical formulas yet because we have not learned the. So for midterm 2 they will be given, however in the future we may need to know them.
