Clarifying Correct Covalent and Ionic bond Models

Postby Ayesha Aslam-Mir 3C » Wed Dec 09, 2020 7:33 pm

I undesrtand that part of correcting the covalent bond understand is knowing about dipole moments and polar covalent bonds, and fully understanding the ionic model takes into account size and sharing of electrons. Is there more to it that is fundamental to understanding the characteristics of both types of bonds?

Additionally, I understand that covalent bonds involve sharing of electrons. How are ionic bonds with larger anions then more covalent? Additionally, with the same anion, how would the covalent character and solubility of an anion be influenced by different sized cations?

Correcting the covalent bond requires looking at the differences in electronegativity for the two bound atoms.

This is the same criterion when deciding if the bond is ionic or covalent.

Larger anions are more easily distorted and pulled into the shared region (which contributes to covalent characteristics).

Re-watch my lecture on this or discuss it in one of the Friday or Saturday sessions, office hours, etc.
