What the different kinds of bonds drawn mean
When he draws certain compounds, he uses triangles that are shaded in and lines that are basically drawn in a triangle shape. Do these mean like different bond lengths or like indicate what shape the compound is? An example of this would be in wed 11/17 lecture at 6.52.

He uses triangles to try to make a 3D representation in a 2D plane
Bold triangle --> atom attached is towards the front (coming towards you)
Striped triangle --> atom attached is towards the back (away from you, behind the plane)

The striped triangle design shows that the atom is facing behind the plane, away from you. The bold/dark triangle shows that the atom is attached facing you (coming towards you).
Re: What the different kinds of bonds drawn mean
Hi! These differently shaded triangles are used to show us 3d models in a 2d plane. So the lines would represent them being in the normal plane, the bold ones show the atoms coming towards you, and the half filled in ones show them going into the paper.

These are there to better represent the 3D model on a 2D plane. The striped triangle means that atom is more behind, while the bold triangle means that the atom is more up front. Hope this helps!

Re: What the different kinds of bonds drawn mean
The different triangles and shading in of bonds is meant to better capture the multiple dimensions of the molecule. The filled in triangles are meant to be coming towards you, while the striped ones are going towards the back of the plane (extending in the opposite direction of you).

Re: What the different kinds of bonds drawn mean
The different types of drawings represent either 2D or 3D structures. The ones with the triangles indicate the 3D structure.

He uses these the represent the 3D shape of molecules. Filled in = coming toward you or out of the white board, Lines= going away from you or into the white board

Here is the main difference idea of the ionic and covalent bonds. In ionic bonding, atoms transfer electrons to each other. Ionic bonds require at least one electron donor and one electron acceptor. In contrast, atoms with the same electronegativity share electrons in covalent bonds, because neither atom preferentially attracts or repels the shared electrons.
