Covalent Character
i'm not sure i quite understand the concept of covalent character. how do you know when an ionic bond has more or less covalent character than another?

Re: Covalent Character
If the atoms share electron density then it is said to have a covalent character. It happens in ionic bonds when the cation is very small and the anion is very big.

Re: Covalent Character
Hi! In simplest terms, the covalent character of an iconic bond depends on the particles' electronegativities. All ionic bonds have at least some covalent character. The smaller the difference in electronegativities, the more covalent the bond is.

Re: Covalent Character
Covalent character is determined by the electronegativity difference between two atoms. The smaller the electronegativity difference (or the more similar in electronegativity), the more "covalent" character a bond has.

Re: Covalent Character
You can find out if an ionic bond has more/less covalent character by comparing the electronegativity differences. For example, if bond A has a electronegativity difference of 2.6 and bond B has a difference of 3.9, bond A would exhibit more covalent characteristics because it has the smaller electronegativity difference.

Re: Covalent Character
You can tell when ionic bonds have more covalent character when there is a smaller electronegativity difference.when there is a larger electronegative difference, it has more ionic character.
