difference between sigma and pi

Postby 705994444 » Tue Nov 21, 2023 7:36 pm

How do sigma and pi bonds differ in terms of their molecular orbitals and bonding characteristics? Is there specific ways of knowing which bond is where?

the sigma bond is end to end orbital interaction while the pi is side by side. The sigma have electron density along the x-axis while the pi is above and below the x-axis. The sigma should be though of as single bond and the pi as double ( & more). Hope this helps!

In terms of their orbitals, sigma bonds are formed by direct head to head overlap between their orbitals. Pi bonds, on the other hand, are formed by side to side overlap usually between p orbitals. This difference results in sigma bonds being stronger than pi bonds. We know a sigma bond forms in single bonds and usually includes two s-orbitals, an s- and p- orbital, or even two p-orbitals. Pi bonds form in double and triple bonds where a sigma bond already exists.

Not only should the sigma bond be thought of as a single bond and pi and double bond, but a double bond includes ONE sigma bond AND ONE pi bond. A triple bond includes one sigma bond, and 2 pi bonds.
