Achieve Week7/8 #16

Postby mact14a 1D » Sun Nov 26, 2023 11:12 pm

Hi! For this question I was wondering how do we determine what is a delocalized pi bond? I am still not sure what a delocalized pi bond is and how it is different from a normal pi bond along with how to determine one from a lewis structure. Thanks in advance!

Hi! A delocalized pi bond refers to pi orbitals that extend over more than 2 atoms. In a Lewis structure, delocalized pi ponds are found in resonance structures with double and triple bonds. Hope this helps!

In a delocalized pi bond, the electrons are free to move between nuclei due to resonance. In a localized pi bond, the electrons are constrained to the area between two atoms.

So in a lewis structure how would we know the difference between the two?
