When do Sigma and Pi bonds occur?

Postby Daniel Rivas 3L » Tue Nov 28, 2017 4:20 pm

I am a little confused as to when sigma and pi bonds occur. I know that we always have a sigma bond first. But are pi bonds always after a sigma bond? Or do sigma bonds sometimes occur after another sigma bond? What differentiates them?

when you have a single bond, it is a sigma bond. A double bond consists of a sigma and pi bond, one for each bond line. A triple bond consists of a sigma and 2 pi bonds, one for each bond line as well.

Essentially, in a single bond, there is going to be a sigma bond. A double bond has a sigma bond and a pi bond. That pi bond prevents rotation. A triple bond has a sigma bond and two pi bonds. I dont believe that there can be two sigma bonds together.

Sigma bonds are when two orbitals interact end to end and overlap while pi bonds are when two orbitals overlap side by side.

Just to add on, sigma bonds also allow the molecules to rotate, whereas they are in a locked position with pi bonds.
