What do we need to know about sigma and pi bonds exactly? I'm not really sure the amount of detail necessary to know.

1 single bond = 1 sigma bond

1 double bond = 1 sigma bond + 1 pi bond

1 triple bond = 1 sigma bond + 2 pi bonds

a sigma bond is one single covalent bond
so for single, double, and triple bonds,
a single bond=1 sigma bond
a double bond=1 sigma bond+1 pi bond
a triple bond=1 sigma bond+2 pi bonds

What exactly are sigma and pi bonds? Are they a type of covalent bond or are they the same as a covalent bond? I went over them briefly in AP Chem but not too much for me to understand them.
