Why do pi bonds not allow bound atoms to rotate?

Since the electrons are overlapped side by side in pi bonds, if you rotated one of the atoms, the bond would be forced to break.

Since pi bonds connect laterally, rotating them will cause the bonds connecting the molecule to snap as they can't handle the stress of rotational forces. Entire molecules with pi bonds can rotate so long as the atoms connected by pi bonds do not rotate ion opposite directions.

Think of a line intersecting a figure 8 in 3D. If you combine the two then the sides of the 8's would touch "88". Rotating one of them away from you or towards you would break the bond between, which is why pi bonds do not permit the rotation about an axis.

Sigma bonds acts like joints which allows for rotation in a molecule, but pi bonds are like two parallel joints and if you try to turn only one joint, you wouldn't be able to because of the other "joint" in the pi bond.
