Test 3 Q3D

Postby Erica Li 1C » Sat Dec 08, 2018 11:54 am

In 3d it asked you to draw a picture showing how a pi bond would be formed from two p orbitals but I had no idea how you're supposed to draw that??

you should draw the two pi bonds next to each other because pi bonds prevent rotation. they are essentially two electron density regions that are on each side of the intermolecular axis

I was confused on that too because I drew them next to each other but I wasn't sure if there was overlap or not

There should be overlap if you are referring to the the diagram of the s hybridizing with the p orbital. If you are referring to the diagram of the bond between two atoms, there should not be overlap.
