Significance of sigma and pi bonds

Postby ashwathinair » Fri Nov 01, 2019 7:44 pm

Exactly what is a sigma and pi bond, and how do we know which molecules have which type of bond?

They have to do with double and triple bonds and how many of each are a sigma or pi bond, but I don't think we need to know this for the midterm because we haven't talked about it in class.

Pretty much single bonds contain one sigma bond, double bonds contain a sigma and a pi bond, and triple bonds have one sigma and two pi bonds.

I think of it as the sigma bond being the main bond and the pi bonds being the extra supporting bonds that give a bit but not as much strength to the bond

Are sigma and pi bonds shown in Lewis Structures or only in describing bond character?
