What is the difference between sigma and pi bonds and why are they important in chemistry? What purpose do these bonds serve in real life chemistry?

Honestly didn't know this was a thing until now, but I learned some really cool info from this site and it helped a lot!
Hope it helps too.

Sigma bonds are always the first bonds to form between atoms, and all the successive bonds are π bonds. I don't know if we'll cover it in this course, but π bonds are important due to how they form (they result from overlapping p orbitals) and their implications for atoms which can engage in this form of bonding.
