### Quantum Numbers

What is the importance/significance of knowing the quantum numbers of orbitals?

### Re: Quantum Numbers

Quantum number presents the state of an electron. Therefore, with quantum number, you can distinguish the energy level of each orbitals.

### Re: Quantum Numbers

Like Jennifer said, quantum numbers detail the state of an electron. They tell you the overall environment of the orbital, like size/energy (n), shape (l), orientation (ml), and spin state (ms).

### Re: Quantum Numbers

Quantum numbers describe the state of an electron. There are 4 quantum numbers: n, l, ml, and ms.

### Re: Quantum Numbers

The four quantum numbers are used to essentially describe an electron. 'n' describes its energy shell, 'l' describes the shape that electron density can be found in, 'ml' describes its orientation, and 'ms' describes spin state.

Knowing the quantum numbers of an orbital will allow you to recognize the energy levels of each.

How do you tell ML again and can someone explain what it is?

### Re: Quantum Numbers

ml describes the orientation of the molecule around an axis, and it can range from -l to +l

ML is the magnetic quantum number (it indicates which orbital the electron is in). It depends on the angular momentum quantum number, or L. Valid values for ML are -L, .. 0, .. L.

For example, for a p orbital (angular momentum quantum #=1), there can be 3 possible ML #s: -1,0, & 1
