Recognizing Sigma and Pi bonds
How are we supposed to know what kind of bond something is? Like if we are given a molecule like H2O or PCl5 or SO4-, how do we identify what bonds are what?

For identifying, we begin with drawing the Lewis structure then count the amount of bonds that each atom has keeping in mind that one single bond is a sigma bond, a double bond is a sigma and pi bond, and a triple bond is a sigma and two pi bonds. From there it is purely identifying and adding. Hope this helps!

did we cover sigma and pi bonds? Are we going to cover them this week?

Re: Recognizing Sigma and Pi bonds
you can just draw the Lewis structure to find the number of single, double, and triple bonds. single bonds are sigma bonds, double bonds have one sigma bond and one pi bond, and triple bonds have one sigma bond and two pi bonds

We have not covered sigma and pi bonds yet, but Dr. Lavelle will be covering them during the beginning portion of Monday's lecture. FYI, they will be on the Test 2 occurring this week
