HW 2F.3.

2F.3. How many sigma-bonds and how many pi-bonds are there in
a) H2S ?
b) SO2 ?

How do you find how many sigma and pi bonds there are in a molecule?

Please help and thank you!

So, the first thing is to draw a Lewis structure.
a) Both H-S bonds are single bonds. A single bond contains a sigma bond. So in total, there are two sigma bonds. Since the pi bond only presents in double bond and triple bond, there is no pi bond.
b) If you draw two double bonds between the O-S bond, there are two sigma bonds and two pi bonds. If you draw one single bond between the O-S bond and one double bond between the other O-S bond, there are two sigma bonds and one pi bond.

Just remember the rules:
Single bond-one sigma bond
Double bond-one sigma bond and one pi bond
Triple bond-one sigma bond and two pi bonds

Yes, the most important thing is to draw the Lewis structure correctly and then from there it should be simple using the rules the previous poster stated to count the sigma and pi bonds

In H2S, there are 2 sigma bonds and no pi bonds because there are just two single bonds in this molecule. There is only one sigma bond in a single bond. In SO2, there are 2 sigma bonds and 2 pi bonds because there are two double bonds in this molecule. In a double bond, there is one sigma bond and one pi bond.

Basically, you draw out the Lewis structure first. For H2S, there are only 2 single bonds: pi bonds only. For SO2, there are 2 double bonds, it means that it has 2 sigma bonds and 2 pi bonds.

Hi! When you draw the structure for H2S there will be two single bonds, meaning there will be two sigma bonds. For S02, the lewis structure will show two double bonds, meaning there will be 2 sigma bonds and 2 pi bonds in total. Hope this helps!
