When you have a double bond, is it correct to label it as "σ + π"?
Also, given a molecule with multiple single bonds, is it correct to label every single bond with a "σ"?
I didn't get my test back last week (since I left campus early) and this question has been buzzing around my mind for some time!
Drawing Sigma and Pi bonds

Re: Drawing Sigma and Pi bonds
I think you have to label each bond individually for double/triple bonds (e.g. write pi above one of the double bonds and sigma above the other). However, the order with which you label pi/sigma for multiple bonds does not matter as long as you have the correct number of each type of bond. And yes, I think it's ok to label every single bond the way that you did. I did it on my exam and was not deducted points :) Hope this helps!

Re: Drawing Sigma and Pi bonds
For my exam, I simply labeled each bond as a sigma bond and each double bond with an extra pi bond. That was the correct way to do it, which means you probably got full points unless you accidentally missed one.

Re: Drawing Sigma and Pi bonds
I think you are suppose to individually label the two bonds in the double bond, one as sigma and one as pi, rather than labeling them both at pi +sigma.

I think it's safest to label each bond individually with a "σ" on top of one line and a "π" on top of the other line.

Re: Drawing Sigma and Pi bonds
You would label the sigma and pi bonds separately for the double bond. The same would apply for a triple bond.
And yes, when there are multiple single bonds, labeling every single bond with a sigma is correct.

You should name the bonds individually and draw the sigma next to the first bond and the pi next to the second and/or third bond, depending on the number of bonds.

Re: Drawing Sigma and Pi bonds
For Test 2, I received full points for simply writing the sigma and pi signs above or below the bond line. Just remember to put a sigma bond sign around every bond line since every bond contains a sigma bond.
