What to Know about the bonds

Postby jordanginyard_ » Thu Dec 10, 2020 4:44 pm

What else do we need to know about the sigma and pi bonds other than the fact that a single bond has one sigma bond,a double bond has one pi bond & one sigma bond, and so forth. What else.

Hi! Sigma bonds are the weaker and more flexible of the two, allowing for rotation of bound atoms, and are bound end-to-end. The overall strength of a pi bond is much higher, and therefore does not allow for rotation of the bound atoms, and pi bonds are bound side-by-side. In addition, pi bonds are perpendicular to one another, so it can cause atoms in certain compounds to be bonded in different planes.
