CO2 sigma/pi bond composition

Postby Jolie Sukonik 2B » Sat Dec 12, 2020 7:11 pm

CO2 is an sp hybridized molecule because there are 2 regions of electron density.
I know the pi bond composition is (C2sp, O2sp)
Is the sigma bond composition also (C2sp, O2sp)?

Thanks! :)

I believe the pi bond composition would just be (C2p, O2p) because p-orbitals are the ones able to take part in pi bonds.

This is actually incorrect. The sigma bond is (C2sp,O2sp) where the orbitals overlap in each of the atoms. Correct me if I am wrong, but the pi bond is (C2p,O2p), since the orbitals do not overlap and exist adjacent to each other. I am not sure if this answer is true, but hope this helps!

The pi bond composition would be (C2p, O2p) while the sigma bond would be (C2sp, O2sp). Pi bonds do overlap, but they do so side by side instead of end-to-end.
