Significance

Postby krish shah » Mon Oct 25, 2021 1:40 pm

What is the true significance of sigma and pi bonds or do they just hold their meaning as classifications?

Hello Krish,

Sigma and pi bonds help us describe the source of how bonds form, allowing us to make inferences on their relative strengths.

For instance, considering sigma bonds originate from a direct overlap of orbitals with pi bonds caused by adjacent p-orbitals, one can compare the relative influences of each bond.

Hi! I was wondering if double bonds consist of 1 sigma and 1 pi, what does triple bond consist of? And which type of bond is stronger?

Thank you!

Triple bonds consist of 1 sigma bond and 2 pi bonds, which is stronger than a double bond.

Hi Krish,

Sigma and pi bonds are significant because they infer the bond's relative strength.
