Lewis Symbol of Ag+ Cation

Postby Sasha Gladkikh 2A » Wed Dec 01, 2021 7:46 pm

Hi,

In textbook exercise 6A.13 of "Acid and Base Structure and Properties", it asks to draw the Lewis structures/symbols for a given set of compounds/ions, including Ag+. How would you draw the lewis symbol of Ag+, knowing that it has 10 valence electrons?

Also, what is the difference between Lewis structures and Lewis symbols?

Lexis symbols are the diagrams that just show with the dots the valence electrons of a molecule. The structure shows the arrangment of the valence electrons in an actual molecule.

I believe the Lewis symbol just represents the electrons in the outermost shell of the atom while lewis structure represents the structure of the molecule and all the atoms within it. For Ag the electron configuration would be [Kr] 4d10 5s1 thus making Ag+ [Kr] 4d10. Due to this you could write the lewis symbol for Ag+ as Ag with 10 electrons around it in brackets with a + charge.
