hi! for this question, how are we supposed to know what the molecular formula is for nitrate and nitrite/phosphate and phosphite?

Hi! "ate" is used to represent higher oxidation states while "ite" is used to represent lower ones. If you're having a really hard time memorizing all the common ones, a trick you can use is to just memorize the "ate" compounds. Then, the "ite" compounds should have the same charge but just one less oxygen. (Ex. Nitrate: NO3-, Nitrite: NO2-)
