Why is O^2- not considered stable if it completes the octet rule?

While does complete the octet rule, it is important to take into consideration the formal charge of the atom.
Oxygen prefers to have two bonds and two lone pairs to be stable. Since this atom does not have those two bonds it is not stable and has a formal charge of -2.
