I have a question concerning lewis structures, how do I determine when I have to use a double/triple bond?

When drawing Lewis structures, you determine whether a double or triple bond should be used by counting up the number of valence electrons that should be present and comparing that to the number you have in the Lewis structure. If there are too many, you can replace lone pairs with a bond to lower the count.
