Does it matter where the atoms are placed in a Lewis diagram?

Postby Angelica Nava-1E » Wed Nov 02, 2016 1:55 pm

For example, for CH2F2 is it okay if I draw the diagram with C in the middle and F with three lone pairs on the top and bottom of C with H on the left and right of C? The answer in the solutions for the text book is C in the middle with F with 3 lone pairs on the top and to the left of F with H to the right and below C. Is my answer still ok or does the location of each atom have to be exactly like in the book?

It's all relative; remember that the lewis structure is a 2D representation whereas the structures are really 3D, so it doesn't matter if you put an atom "on top" or "to the left" of the central atom per say.
