Postby Tara 1F » Mon Jul 17, 2017 8:39 pm

I'm confused on the steps on how to solve this problem. Can someone show me how they solved it or give tips!

Do you mind providing a picture of the problem or replicating it below?

On the basis of the expected charges on the monatomic ions, give the chemical formula of each of the following compounds: (a) magnesium arsenide; (b) indium(III) sulfide; (c) aluminum hydride; (d) hydrogen telluride; (e) bismuth(III) fluoride.

3.27 is also a similar type of problem.

On the basis of the expected charges of the monatomic ions, give the chemical formula of each of the following compounds: (a) thallium(III) chloride; (b) aluminum sulfide; (c) manganese(IV) oxide.

Using thallium(III) chloride as an example.
The total charge is zero. Therefore total cation charge must equal total anion charge.
Since the thallium is +3 and chloride is -1, there must be three chloride anions which gives the answer:
TlCl3

For part b of problem 3.25, the answer is In2S3 but for In I got +3 and for S I got +6. How do you get In2S3? Same for part d; the answer is H2Te but for H I got +1 and for Te I got +6, the answer is H2Te not H6Te.
