ClO2 ... ?

Postby Ben Rolnik 1D » Sun Jul 23, 2017 2:34 pm

Why is the the lewis structure for CLO2 "O-Cl-O" (with 3 electrons around Cl) and not "O = Cl = O" (with 3 electrons around Cl).... both have FC of 0 and 19 electrons... in fact the one with 2 double bonds actually has the lower formal charge.

Thanks!

So, I think you're actually correct! I was wondering what source you were looking at that said it was the "O-Cl-O" (with 3 electrons around Cl) option and not the double bonded one you suggested?
I've looked at a couple sources and they all say it's the double bonded option, and that's what makes sense to me also.
