Lewis Dot Structure

I know that in class the professor said that it didn't matter where you started drawing the dots but are the dots like orbitals where you have to spread out the dots like the arrows before you pair up the electrons on one side?

No, just fill up each side of the symbol (top, left, bottom, and/or right) with up to 2 dots, and if there needs to be a bond draw the lines to connect them.

You don't have to, but I usually do it anyway so I can keep track of how many unpaired valence electrons I have and how many I need.
