How do you calculate the total number of valence electrons when making a lewis structure.

The total valence electrons are calculated by adding the valence electrons for each element in the molecule and then adding electrons if the charge of the molecule is negative or subtracting electrons if the charge is positive. The number of electrons added or subtracted is based on the magnitude of the charge of the molecule.
For example,
SO4(2-)= 6 (from S) + 4*6 (from O) + 2 (from the 2- charge) = 32
