In 1999, Karle Christe synthesized and characterized a salt that contained the N5+ cation, in which the five N atoms are connected in a long chain. This cation is the first all-nitrogen species to be isolated in more than 100 years. Draw the most important Lewis structure for this ion, including all equivalent resonance structures. Calculate the formal charges on all atoms.

Why does the solution manual not include a structure with four double bonds in between each N, and 4 lone electrons attached to each outer N? The electrons would still add up to 24 valence electrons, so why isn't this formation included in the resonance structure?

This is because each N would carry a formal charge. It is best to keep the number of formal charged atoms as low as possible.
