4.7A Homework

Postby Nha Dang 2I » Thu Nov 30, 2017 3:38 am

4.7 (a) What is the shape of the thionyl chloride molecule, SOCl2? Sulfur is the central atom. (b) How many different OSCl bond angles are there in this molecule? (c) What values are expected for the OSCl and ClSCl bond angles?

For A, I'm not sure if I drew it correctly. Is it supposed to be single bonds with a lone pair on Sulfur?

For SOCl2, the oxygen atom and two chlorine atoms are each bonded to sulfur by a single bond, and sulfur also has a lone pair to complete the octet. Then, because there are four areas of electron density with one lone pair, the shape is trigonal pyramidal.

For part b, the OSCL angles are all the same because the long pair repels them equally. For part c, since the shape is a trigonal pyramidal, the angles will be slightly less than 109.5 (106-107).

If I'm not mistaken oxygen has a double bond with sulfur.
