Dots or lines

Postby Noah Carey 1G » Sun May 13, 2018 11:52 pm

Instead of drawing two dots, my TA saved time by drawing lines which represent two electrons around the element while working through examples in discussion. Can I do this on a test and not be marked down?

My TA did this as well and he said it would be fine to do on a test or quiz since the two dots or the one line are referring to the same two electrons. He actually recommended using lines on the test instead of individual dots because it's a huge time saver if you're dealing with a complicated Lewis Structure or many resonance structures.

Hope this helps!

I tend to use lines too because my high school Chemistry teacher said it was the same thing as drawing two dots, but you should double check with your TA just incase.

I am pretty sure that it is fine to use a line to represent 2 electrons as opposed to drawing the two dots every time.

I see lines used to represent 2 electrons pretty often so I think its generally accepted as the same as drawing the two dots.

I believe that it's fine to use lines since Dr. Lavelle uses dots simply to erase confusion before delving into the concept. I think moving forward we will be using the system of lines in class.
