why does it only have 6 valence electrons? I didn't understand it clearly.

Since Boron "wants" 3 electrons when doing formal charge, and you only count 1 from each bond, boron needs 3 bonds to be the most stable.

Boron has 5 valence electrons, meaning it will share 3 electrons with another atom in order to form an octet.
