Where to put double bonds?

Postby alexagreco1A » Sun May 20, 2018 5:13 pm

In a problem like 3.41 (c): Write the Lewis structure for H2C(NH2)COOH, how do we know where to put the double bond?

you would probably have to check the formal charges and see which position for the double bonds creates fewer formal charges

You place the double and triple bonds wherever necessary to make the formal charges as low as possible.

Double bonds usually go where they are needed to create the lowest formal charge possible.
