3.41 part c

It asks to create the lewis structure of H2C(NH2)COOH. Where would I start? How would I set this up?

You would start the structure with NH2 followed by H2C and COOH. The central atoms in the Lewis structure would be Nitrogen, Carbon, and Oxygen.

My TA says that when there are multiple carbons we should try to line them up horizontally and bond them. Then, try to fit in all the other components and complete their octets around the molecule. You should worry about hydrogen last since they are the easiest to accommodate since they only need one bond. Hope this helped! :)

A good way to draw these Lewis structures is to split that compound into three different compounds where you would draw H2C first and then NH2 and COOH and then put these Lewis structures together. The carbon in H2C would then bond to the nitrogen in NH2 and then you bond the carbon from H2C to the carbon from COOH since carbon can bond with four elements, in this case, being the two hydrogens and the nitrogen, which leaves the last spot for the carbon from COOH.

When I added up the total amount of valence e- I should have, I got 30 valence e-. In the solutions manual, they started with NH2 first, but in my lewis structure I started with H2C first. I still have the same amount of total valence e-'s as the lewis structure in the solutions manual. Does it matter which way you do your lewis structure for this one, or other examples?
